Windows 8.1 Not Worth the Time to Download

In the last couple of days, the preview release of Windows 8.1 has been available for download. Here are a list of things that worked under 8.0, but are broken under 8.1:

  • The Start Button feature has been an integral feature of the Microsoft Operating System since Windows XP was released. Windows 8 broke with that tradition. Windows 8.1 was rumored to add the Start Button back. Sadly, this is not the case.
  • The third party add-on software from StarDock that I was using for Start Button functionality no longer works. A beta release for this software is required to get it to work with 8.1.
  • The software I use for antivirus protection (AVG Free Edition), no longer works. Microsoft recommends the 14 day trial beta release of Norton Antivirus.
  • My email under Microsoft Outlook did not work without change. My email profile had to be changed to a less secure protocol to get it to work again.
  • The Malwarebytes software package no longer works for malware/spyware protection.
What does the 8.1 release provide that is different from 8.0?:
  • The list of new features from Microsoft are not ones that will impact the home user of this product.
  • Performance is slower when compared to 8.0.
Overall, 8.1 was a great disappointment and should be avoided as a option to improve 8.0
